Botox, or botulinum toxin, is a muscle-relaxing prescription medicine used to treat aesthetic and health problems. The most well-known aesthetic indications for Botox are forehead and eyebrow wrinkle corrections and treatments for moderate results on the lower face, e.g. botox lip flip. Today, botulinum is mainly used to treat excessive sweating, teeth grinding and migraines.
Botulinum treatment is no longer very new. The mechanisms of action of the drug were first discovered by Californian ophthalmologist Alan B. Scott, who first used botulinum toxin to successfully treat his patients with strabismus in the 1970s. In aesthetic medicine, botulinum has been used with good success since the 1980s. Many aesthetic treatments have come and gone over the decades, with botulinum treatment becoming a classic.
Botulinum treatment is done with type A botulinum, which reduces muscle activity for 3-12 months. The reduction in muscle activity is reflected, among other things, in the smoothing of fine lines and, in the case of forehead lifting, in a slight elevation of the features.
Botox injections work by blocking the release of acetylcholine at the nerve endings. The effect is always temporary and the nerve endings gradually recover over the months following treatment. The zone will be back to its original state after about a year of botulinum surgery. The most visible results of the treatment will have disappeared before then.

The result of the treatment will gradually become apparent over the days following the treatment. Some studies have shown that the results of botulinum toxin preparations such as Dysport and Azzalure appear a few days earlier than Botox and Vistabel.
Whatever the brand name of the botulinum product, results can only be assessed after two weeks of treatment.
You can book a free check-up 2-4 weeks after your Botox treatment. The same doctor or nurse who performed the procedure will book the appointment. At the follow-up visit, botulinum toxin can be added to the treated area free of charge if there is no more than four weeks between the follow-up visit and the initial treatment.
The result of treatment disappears in the same way as it comes: gradually. In general, the result of browlifting remains good for three to six months. For some clients, the results last longer after three or more treatments. It is not uncommon to enjoy the results of botulinum treatment for up to six months.
The results of aesthetic botulinum treatments are good when performed by an aesthetic medical professional. However, unrealistic hopes for change should be discouraged. Botox will not make anyone's features look better by the hundredth of a cent. The results of the treatment will become apparent gradually over the next few days, and sometimes it is difficult for the client to notice a subtle change.
We always include a photograph of the initial situation in the medical record. And if the client comes back for a check-up in a few weeks' time, we will of course also include a follow-up photo in the medical records. I also often ask the client to take a photo of their face before the treatment and a couple of weeks after the treatment. Photographs are the best way to notice these small important changes. As the results gradually become apparent, it is difficult to see the progress of the change without photographs.
For patient safety, change images are stored in each client's own records. Of course, no one's photos will be published anywhere without explicit written permission.
After botulinum injections, the client can return to their normal life. Sweating, pressure and massage of the treatment area and extreme temperatures should be avoided for a few days, but otherwise recovery is straightforward.
Very rarely, bruising may occur at the botox injection sites. In principle, a dip in botulinum treatment does not show up on the outside except as a gradual freshening of the appearance.

If the eyebrows are raised too much at any point or the look feels like Spock brows, the result can be corrected in the control by strategically adding botulinum in the right places.
