Lip flip - FAQ
What is a botox lip flip?
Lip flip is a non-surgical lip augmentation treatment that enhances the fullness of the lips while maintaining their natural appearance. During the treatment, a small amount of Botox is injected precisely at several points at the corners of the mouth and around the lips, also known as the vermillion border. As a cosmetically safe neurotoxin protein, Botox relaxes the muscles around the lips.
In particular, the lip flip relaxes the orbicularis oris muscle, which controls movement and tension in the lips. When Botox is injected into this muscle, tension in the muscle is reduced and the lip 'flips' outwards, creating a fuller upper lip appearance without the added volume of a filler. The treatment does not actually enlarge the lips; it makes the existing lip more prominent.
What are the benefits of treatment?
The results of a Lip Flip are very natural, making it an excellent option for those who prefer to avoid fillers.
The treatment affects not only the shape of the lip but also the vertical lines above the upper lip ("smoker's lines").
Is lip flip a lip filler treatment?
While a Lip Flip may sound similar to lip plumping, the two treatments are quite different. A Lip Flip doesn’t add volume or increase lip size; instead, it relaxes the muscle above the lips, subtly adjusting their position. In contrast, Juvéderm and Restylane fillers are injected directly into the lips to enhance their size and fullness.
A Lip Flip is performed using botulinum toxin, whereas a lip filler treatment uses hyaluronic acid. Their mechanisms of action are quite different—botulinum temporarily relaxes muscle activity, while fillers add volume by physically filling the tissue.
Who is the treatment for?
You can opt for a Botox Lip Flip instead of a filler treatment if you're looking for a natural-looking enhancement, want to soften vertical lines above the upper lip, or wish to reduce a gummy smile.
How long will the result last?
Results begin to appear within a few days. It takes at least two to three days for the muscles around the lips to start relaxing, with the full effect becoming visible about 1–2 weeks after treatment.
You can expect good or fairly good results for about 2–3 months, though individual outcomes may vary. The longevity of the effect depends on several factors, especially how much your lips move when you talk or smile.
