Brotox, or Botox for men

Botox Treatments for Men

Botox and botulinum toxin treatments have generally been considered beauty treatments aimed at women, but this is not the case. In fact, over the past 10 years, men have steadily become more active in seeking treatments such as botulinum toxin for bruxism, and the demand for aesthetic procedures is skyrocketing. “Brotox” is a playful name for men’s Botox, and we want to help normalize aesthetic and medical botulinum toxin treatments for men as well!

Brotox – Botox for Men

Botulinum toxin treatments are performed for both aesthetic and medical reasons. Common aesthetic indications for botulinum toxin treatments include various dynamic and static expression lines. Botulinum toxin can temporarily paralyze facial muscles, thereby reducing or even completely eliminating the formation of these lines. Dynamic lines are those that form on the face when making facial expressions: when furrowing the brows, vertical lines form between the eyebrows (Sibelius lines); when raising the eyebrows, horizontal lines appear on the forehead; and when smiling, crow’s feet form at the corners of the eyes. Over time, these lines develop into static lines: at this point, the line or wrinkle remains visible on the face even at rest. Botox (the brand name of one botulinum toxin product; others include Dysport and Xeomin) smooths out existing wrinkles and lines. Mild lines may disappear completely with treatment, while deeper lines become less pronounced.

Medical indications for botulinum toxin treatments include, for example, migraines, excessive sweating, bruxism, muscle dystonias, and other disorders of motor control in the brain. Botulinum toxin helps relax tense muscles, whether they are causing painful spasms, migraines, or simply expression lines on the face. Botulinum toxin can also help with bruxism, or teeth grinding, if the primary treatment—a nightguard—has not provided relief. Anyone concerned about teeth grinding should visit their dentist, as it’s a good idea to have the condition of their teeth checked.

Gender does not affect how muscles and their nerve endings function. The brain sends a signal to the muscle to contract, and as a result, the muscle contracts. The main differences between men and women in cosmetic botulinum toxin treatments are related to the amount of botulinum toxin used and the desired outcomes.

Often, male clients do not want, for example, completely smooth skin and a motionless forehead, but rather a more relaxed appearance than before. Not all men who undergo Botox treatments are a monolithic group, but rather a diverse one: for this reason, we discuss your wishes and expectations before the treatment. It’s important for us to know exactly what concerns you when you look at yourself in the mirror. We want to know what changes you’d like to see and what your expectations are for the results of the Botox treatment. Sometimes, another treatment might be a better fit for your specific needs.

The most common indications for botulinum toxin treatments in men—known as “Brotox”—are the lines that form between the eyebrows (known among friends as “Sibelius”), horizontal forehead lines, and the so-called “laugh lines” (or “crow’s feet”) that form at the corners of the eyes. In these cases, we refer to botulinum toxin treatments for the upper face, and the toxin is targeted at the corrugator supercilii, procerus, frontalis, and orbicularis oculi muscles.

Gender differences are evident both in treatment preferences and in the amount of botulinum toxin used: men’s muscles are often thicker and stronger than women’s. For this reason, the amount of Botox used may also be higher. However, this is not reflected in the price of our service; instead, you pay based on the areas treated.

For example, a botulinum toxin treatment for the upper face, which targets three zones: horizontal forehead lines, vertical forehead lines, and the corners of the eyes: €449 (nurse) or €469 (doctor, dentist).

Does Botox treatment hurt?

Like any injection treatment, botulinum toxin treatment causes some sensation. However, the pain associated with botulinum toxin treatment is generally well tolerated, as the needle used is very thin and you’ll only feel a slight prick as the needle pierces the skin. Injecting Botox into a muscle may feel like a slight pressure, but it does not burn or sting. The amount of Botox per injection site is a few tenths of a milliliter, so the sensation of pressure passes quickly.

When will the results be visible?

According to research, the results of botulinum toxin treatment are at their best about two weeks after the procedure. However, some people may notice results as early as a few days after treatment. The effect of botulinum toxin on muscle nerve endings peaks rapidly around the two-week mark and then declines slowly; muscle function usually returns to normal about 4–6 months after treatment.

Immediately after treatment, the skin may be red, and sometimes bruises may appear at the injection sites. However, clients can usually walk out the door of our clinic without any visible signs of the injection treatment they just received. The redness fades within minutes, and any bruises disappear within a few days.

As the treatment is repeated, the muscles can learn to relax, preventing the lines from deepening further. Results improve, and the interval between treatments can be extended.

Botox works best as a preventive treatment when wrinkles haven’t yet become very deep. The formation of wrinkles varies from person to person: for people who make a lot of facial expressions, static wrinkles—those visible at rest—can develop even before the age of 30. However, it’s never too late to achieve a more relaxed and refreshed appearance, and most men trying Botox for the first time are around 40 years old.
