Botulinum toxin, or Botox, is effective for treating a gummy smile. The procedure involves injecting a very small amount of the toxin around the upper lip. Within a couple of weeks, the gummy smile is corrected as the upper lip settles neatly over the gums.

Gummy smile correction is typically done using type A botulinum toxin, a prescription medication. The doctor or dentist is responsible for diagnosing the issue, prescribing the treatment, and carrying it out. Botulinum toxin works by blocking the release of acetylcholine at the nerve endings, which means the targeted muscle doesn't contract as strongly. When treating a gummy smile, this results in the upper lip, which used to be more active, covering the gums. You’ll start noticing the change 3 to 5 days after the injection, with the full effect appearing between 2 and 6 weeks after treatment.
The gummy smile does not return to its full baseline until 9-12 months after the injection. However, the maximum and outwardly visible result only lasts for 3-6 months.
