Medical botulinum treatment and Kela reimbursement
When the medicine is prescribed on prescription for the treatment of a medical condition, Kela will reimburse part of the cost of the Botox medicine. Botox is prescribed to treat migraines and hyperhidrosis, for example. Botulinum treatments for bruxism have not been covered by Kela since 19 March 2025.
Kela will reimburse part of the cost of a botulinum toxin after a doctor has diagnosed a migraine and written a prescription for a botulinum toxin, for example Botox. You can get Kela reimbursement by presenting your Kela card at the pharmacy.
You will only be reimbursed for botulinum for the treatment of a medical condition. Aesthetic botulinum treatments are not covered by Kela.
Kela reimbursements for medicines can be obtained after paying the initial deductible.
The annual maximum limit is the maximum amount you will pay for your Kela-reimbursed medicines in one calendar year.
In 2025, Kela’s annual maximum limit is €633.17. Once you reach this limit, you’ll only pay €2.50 for each prescription medicine for the rest of the year.
Doctor Emilia Sundqvist has diagnosed Milla with migraines. Emilia has also given Milla a prescription for Botox (200 units). In 2025, the price of Botox will be €412.90.
On 1 January 2025, Milla buys her Botox medicine. She first pays the €70 initial deductible. After that, Kela covers 40% of the remaining cost, and Milla pays the remaining 60%.
Milla’s next visit to pick up her prescription Botox is in June. She has already reached the initial deductible of €70, so that’s taken care of for the year. Kela will now reimburse 40% of the cost of her Botox.
By November, Milla’s Kela-reimbursed medicine purchases have already passed the annual maximum limit, which in 2025 is €633.17. Once this limit is reached, Milla qualifies for additional reimbursement. This means that for the rest of the year, she’ll only pay a small co-payment of €2.50 for her medicine.
Some insurance companies cover medical botox treatments. If you have health insurance and your doctor has prescribed Botox for you to treat a medical condition, contact your insurance company to find out if your botulinum treatment is covered.

Treatment of migraine or excessive sweating with botulinum toxin
At the first visit, the drug to be used (Botox/Dysport) will be agreed. The price of a more extensive botulinum treatment than usual may be higher than the starting price indicated in this price list. The total price will always be quoted before the treatment. For the first treatment, the patient only buys the drug after his/her appointment. On subsequent occasions, the patient buys the medicine before coming to the clinic.
